A judgment is one of the most damaging things to your credit report. Unlike collections which involve a dispute between two private parties and are almost always handled privately, a judgment occurs when there is a court-ordered mandate to repay a debt. This can occur in situations such as failure to pay child support, alimony, or civil and small claims lawsuits. Judgments affect your credit adversely. If you have a judgment on your credit report, your score will be lower and potential creditors will be hesitant to loan you money.
As mentioned already, a collection is usually a private matter. When a debt goes from a collection to a judgment, it begins to involve outside agencies – specifically a legal court. A judgment means that your creditor is suing you in order to obtain the debt you owe. If a judgment is issued against you, you will need to either pay the debt quickly, or else appear before a judge in court. If you lose your case in court, typically you will be penalized by having a lien placed upon your house, or having your wages garnished. In some cases you may even be forced to forfeit your belongings.
From Judgments to a Higher Credit Score
Even though a judgment is a serious matter, there is still much that can be done to move beyond having a judgment on your credit report. There are legal firms out there that specialize in helping people to improve their credit. Firms like Lexington Law can remove all kinds of negative items from your credit report – including judgments. In 2010, Lexington Law removed 42,019 judgments from credit reports of people just like you. A judgment is definitely something that can definitely be overcome – I learned this lesson myself a while back.
My Credit Repair Story
I lost my job a while ago and it took me a while to find a new one. I quickly discovered that the job market was pretty tough these days. I would spend hours searching every day, but nothing good seemed to be available. Then, when there were good jobs I was competing with 100 other people for them.
I basically lost my income stream and resorted to paying my bills with credit cards and other loans. The credit card spending quickly caught up to me and I found myself over my head. While I tried to get caught up on my credit card debts, I was getting further and further behind on all my other bills. I felt like I was drowning in debt. The only way out I could see was bankruptcy.
Initially after I filed for bankruptcy I figured I could get by without having good credit. I quickly found out that I was wrong. Almost everything I wanted to buy depended on me having good credit. After getting turned down several times, I decided I needed help.
Lexington Law Helped Me Take Control of My Credit
I was talking to a friend one day and he told me to check out Lexington Law. I looked around on their site for a week before I finally decided to sign up. I called the 1-800 number at the site (800-220-0084) and spoke to a credit expert who was very friendly and understanding of my situation. That was one of the best financial decisions I have made. Since I signed up with Lexington Law, my credit score has gradually improved. I keep getting random letters telling me that new things have been removed from my credit report. I don’t think I could have ever figured out how to do that on my own.
I realize now that I made a mistake in not paying my bills on time. However, at the end of the day, there was a silver lining. By starting up with Lexington Law I have improved my credit score.
